Dave Rosenthal, Winemaker, R Vineyards
As a 1979 graduate of the U.C. Davis winemaking degree program, Dave Rosenthal has been involved in the wine industry for almost 40 years working with a wide range of wines, varietals and growing regions throughout Northern California.
His winemaking career began in 1980 at the Konocti Winery in Lake County, (now known as Steele Winery.) In the mid 1980’s, Dave was named assistant winemaker at California’s oldest winery, Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma/Carneros where he had the opportunity to study with legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, credited by many to have transformed Northern California into a world-class winemaking region.
In the mid 1990’s, Dave returned to Lake County. He accepted a position as winemaker and general manager for Redwood Valley Cellars in Ukiah, a new custom crush business designed to service both the needs of other wineries, as well as growers desiring to sell their grapes as wine. When Bill Pauli, the managing partner of Redwood Valley Cellars decided to build a new facility, Dave had the honor and privilege to work with the entire Pauli Family to build, operate and establish a ‘state of the art’ winemaking facility, Yokayo Wine Company located in Ukiah, California.
Serving the broader agriculture industry, Dave currently sits on the Lake County Farm Bureau board, served as president for three years, and is currently the District Director of the California Farm Bureau Federation, representing both Mendocino and Lake Counties. Other boards and committees he has served on include the Lake County Winegrape Commission, Erosion Prevention and Education committee and the Middletown Area Plan committee in 2014, Dave and his wife Monica officially started their own boutique wine brand, R Vineyards. Their signature white wine is Viognier; red wines include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah/Petite Sirah blend and old vine Zinfandel all grown on the Rosenthal family vineyards in Middletown, CA.
