Erosion Control

Dormant vines in the winter

Lake County and the State of California have adopted vineyard and other land development requirements to prevent soil erosion.  New vineyards require a grading  permit as well as other steps to safeguard the environment and natural resources.

Randy Krag (formerly of Beckstoffer Vineyards) discusses some of the techniques used to prevent soil erosion, which he says is essential in protection of rivers, waterways, lakes, of habitat of fish and wildlife: “Soil is the foundation of how we produce quality winegrapes, so we want to protect the resource that’s out here. This is the heart of sustainable farming – keeping the resource in as good a condition for the future as it was when started using it.”
