Mountains of the North Coast
The Lake County wine region is bounded by mountains – the Mayacamas to the west, the Vaca Range to the southeast, and the Mendocino Mountains to the north.
The region has a wide spectrum of geologic formations caused by a process called subduction with the monumental forces of colliding tectonic plates and the folding and uplift of Great Valley Sequence (Central Valley). Subterranean volcanoes have broken through the surface and created new landscapes. Sandstone and shale as well as deep ocean floor rock and serpentine were exposed.
